In a confidential letter to fans, Bridges wrote about the project: “‘Leon’ has been a long time coming. I have been Gold digger sound. They didn’t fit with what I wanted to achieve with this album and I tried to move on. But I couldn’t get rid of them because they are a part of me. And, if I’m honest, also because I think this is my best work to date.”

The musician continued: “In many ways Leon has been in the works since I was a kid. This record is about simpler days. It’s about the time I spent in my beloved Fort Worth and the experiences that made me the man I am today. It’s soulful music in the truest sense of the word – it’s steeped in my soul.” He concluded his note by saying, “I look forward to sharing these stories about home, about nostalgia, about my upbringing, about where I came from, with all of you. I hope this music brings you back to your roots and your journey.”

The set was recorded and produced in El Desierto, a suburb of the bustling city of Mexico City, with help from Ian Fitchuk (Kacey Musgraves, Maggie Rogers) and in Nashville with co-production help from Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves). The 13-track LP is designed to highlight Bridges’ songwriting talent and storytelling ability, all delivered with a certain sense of naturalness.
