Body of missing Indiana woman found after swimming in Puerto Rico

A 22-year-old Indianapolis woman was found dead off Condado Beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico, this week after she disappeared while swimming with friends, authorities said.

The body of Cimone Alicea Dawson was recovered “underwater and unconscious” on Monday, September 9, U.S. Coast Guard officials said in a news release.

Dawson had been swimming with two other friends the night before when the three were caught in the strong surf currents in the area, the Coast Guard said.

Two of the women were rescued when a passerby alerted the coast guard after hearing screams and observing two people in distress at around 6:30 p.m.

According to the Coast Guard, several units were dispatched to the scene, including a Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter from Borinquen Air Force Base, a Coast Guard HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from Mobile Air Force Base and a 33-foot law enforcement special boat from San Juan Air Force Base.

Marine units of the Puerto Rico Police Department’s Joint Forces of Rapid Action, as well as state and local rescue personnel, also conducted search operations at the scene.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this young woman and pray that they find strength and closure during this extremely difficult time,” Commander Matthew Romano, the Coast Guard search and rescue operations coordinator for the case, said in a statement.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the bystanders and local authorities for their intervention, which saved two lives, and to all Coast Guard units and emergency partners for their professionalism, dedication and tireless efforts during the search,” Romano said.

Dawson’s death came nearly a year after 44-year-old Indianapolis teacher Amanda Lynn Webster was reportedly found dead in a river along the Rio Blanco neighborhood in the Camino Viejo sector of Naguabo, about 35 miles southeast of San Juan.

Webster, who had been vacationing on the island, disappeared in October 2023 after the owner of the property where she was staying noticed that she had left her belongings and a rental car on site.
