Boar’s Head factory filled with blood, bugs and mould forced to close after dozens hospitalised due to tainted sausage meat

A Boar’s Head plant that produced deli meat in Virginia will cease operations after a deadly listeria outbreak occurred in several states.

The company announced Friday that it would close its Jarratt, Virginia, plant and take several steps to improve the food safety of its products.

“Our investigation has determined that the cause of the contamination is a specific production process that only existed at the Jarratt plant and was only used for liver sausage. As a result of this discovery, we have decided to permanently discontinue production of liver sausage,” Boar’s Head said in a press release on Friday.

The plant in Boar’s Head, Virginia, had been closed since July, when the company first announced the recall of more than 200,000 sausages.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has received reports since 2022 that the facility was infested with insects, “blood in pools on the floor,” mold, and more.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nine people have died and 57 people have been hospitalized as a result of the listeria outbreak in 18 states.

Boar’s Head announced that in addition to stopping producing liver sausage, the company would also appoint a food safety officer and independent food safety experts to an advisory board to oversee a company-wide food safety program.
