Valentina Shevchenko is back at the top of the flyweight throne.

Shevchenko (24-4-1 MMA, 13-3-1 UFC) finished her trilogy with Alexa Grasso (16-4-1 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC) with eight takedowns en route to a decisive unanimous decision victory. The women’s flyweight title fight was the co-main event of UFC 306 at The Sphere in Las Vegas.

Grasso started the fight with a flurry as Shevchenko landed a solid left counter. Shevchenko again made Grasso pay for the entry, this time with a right counter. Shevchenko went for a takedown and got it. Grasso hit a triangle off her back and then went for an armbar attempt, but Shevchenko was able to break free. Grasso continued to attack from below and attempted a guillotine, but Shevchenko defended well. Shevchenko ended the round by attacking Grasso from behind.

Less than a minute into the second round, Shevchenko managed another takedown. Grasso attempted an armbar attempt but was blocked. When Shevchenko tried to pull her back, Grasso took the opportunity to get back up but was immediately taken down again. Grasso threatened again from below, but Shevchenko was aware of this.

The first half of Round 3 was fought standing up, with Shevchenko incorporating kicks into her attacks. Midway through the round, Shevchenko took Grasso down and worked on an arm-triangle choke. She maintained control for the rest of the round.

Shevchenko ran into trouble early in the fourth round when Grasso jumped into a deep guillotine choke. However, Shevchenko escaped and worked to an arm-triangle choke. More control time for the challenger as she ended the round with a barrage of punches in the crucifix position.

Grasso was desperate as she entered the final round and was trailing by a large margin. A takedown attempt from Shevchenko was fought off by Grasso, who attempted a takedown of her own, but she couldn’t keep her down. Shevchenko landed two short takedowns as the pair entered the fight. “The Bullet” finished the fight with another takedown, ending the fight with back control.

After defending her flyweight title seven times during her first reign, Shevchenko regained her belt.
