Alohi Gilman among the inactives in Week 2 against Panthers

Alohi Gilman among the inactives in Week 2 against Panthers

The Los Angeles Chargers have released the list of inactive players for Week 2.

The list includes safety Alohi Gilman, running back Kimani Vidal, cornerback Tarheeb Still, offensive lineman Jordan McFadden, wide receiver Brenden Rice, defensive tackle Justin Eboigbe and quarterback Taylor Heinicke.

Gilman will not play against the Carolina Panthers. The safety was unable to practice all week due to an injury.

Gilman recorded four tackles in the season opener, three of which were solo tackles, and although he didn’t have the best performance in Week 1, he is ready to shine in defensive coordinator Jesse Minter’s scheme this season.

The safety earned his starting spot this season after emerging as a highly touted player on defense. Gilman was projected as a CBS breakout player for the 2024 season, but if he misses multiple games, it will be difficult to put on consistent performances.

The Chargers have stepped up Tony Jefferson in Gilman’s absence. In the preseason against the Dallas Cowboys, Jefferson was an absolute ballhawk. His final stats from the preseason game included 14 tackles, 11 solo tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble, one sack, two passes defensed and one quarterback hit.

Four notable rookies, namely Vidal, Still, Rice and Eboigbe, are inactive for the second week in a row. Rice will not make his NFL debut on Sunday. He made significant progress during training camp and made several spectacular plays, but it seems he has not yet established himself as a complementary part of the offense.

The former Trojan is the son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, but it appears he hasn’t made much progress in securing a backup role on offense.

Vidal was expected to handle some of the third-down duties for the Chargers as he outranked Isaiah Spiller in the battle for a roster spot in Los Angeles, but he won’t do so in Week 2.

Henicke is listed as an emergency quarterback behind Justin Herbert and Easton Stick. The backup quarterback was signed in late August in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons.

Heinicke is a veteran quarterback who has played in 38 games and started 29 of them. In his career, he has thrown for 6,635 yards, 39 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.

Joey Bosa, Joshua Palmer, Ja’Sir Taylor and Hassan Haskins are all active against the Panthers. All four players were listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report. The inactive list for Carolina included Chau Smith-Wade, Shemar Bartholomew, Mike Boone, Andrew Raym, Jarrett Kingston and Messiah Swinson.
