AP Top 25: Texas overtakes Georgia for No. 1 after Longhorns dominate and Bulldogs struggle

The AP Top 25 has a new No. 1 after the events of week three on Saturday.

Texas is the new team at the top of the poll after the Longhorns crushed UTSA 56-7 in Austin. Starting quarterback Quinn Ewers left the game in the second quarter with a reported abdominal strain, but Arch Manning took over and led Texas to five touchdowns.

Georgia drops to No. 2 after surviving a 13-12 loss to Kentucky in Lexington. The Bulldogs’ offense struggled against a tenacious Wildcats defense that kept the run well under control. Georgia finally scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to take the lead, but still had to hold on for the final victory. The 13 points are the fewest scored by a No. 1 team since Alabama beat LSU 10-0 in 2016.

It’s the first time the Longhorns have been ranked No. 1 since 2008. Texas held the top spot for three weeks before losing to Texas Tech in an early November game.

This year’s team is expected to stay at No. 1 for at least a week, with Louisiana-Monroe next on the schedule. A win over Mississippi State is also likely after the Bulldogs lost 41-17 to Toledo in Week 3. That’s followed by the annual Red River Rivalry matchup with Oklahoma on Oct. 12.

Texas hosts Georgia on October 19 in an SEC showdown that could decide the first seed for the rest of the season.

The rest of the top 5 remained where they were, with Ohio State remaining at No. 3, followed by Alabama at No. 4 and Ole Miss at No. 5.

Tennessee rose one spot to No. 6 after beating Kent State 71-0, while Missouri slipped to No. 7 after beating Boston College 27-21. Miami jumped two spots to No. 1 after beating Ball State 62-0. Oregon held on to No. 9. And Penn State dropped two spots to No. 10 due to an off week.

For the second week in a row, the SEC holds six of the top seven spots in the poll.

Boston College fell out of the top 25 after losing to Missouri, while Arizona also drops out after a 31-7 loss to Kansas State. Illinois is in the poll for the first time this season, ranked No. 24, and Texas A&M is back in the poll after its 33-20 win over Florida.
