Jerod Mayo stresses that the Patriots need to include a playmaker in the game

It was a quiet day for the Patriots’ wide receivers in Week 2, especially for one of their most dynamic playmakers.

New England suffered a 23-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at Gillette Stadium. Jacoby Brissett threw for a mediocre 149 yards on 15 of 27 passes. Hunter Henry benefited the most on the day, catching 109 yards, but the wide receivers combined for three catches for 19 yards.

It was encouraging to see Ja’Lynn Polk become more involved in the passing game – the rookie caught the Patriots’ first touchdown pass – but DeMario Douglas simply showed off his full strength and the sophomore wide receiver went targetless on Sunday.

“Yeah, we’ve got to get him going. We’ve got to figure out some things for him,” Mayo told reporters, according to a transcript provided by the team. “He’s one of our most explosive players, and it’s up to us as coaches to get that under control.”

It was a mixed day for the coaches in terms of their game plan. New England stayed true to its primary goal, rushing for 185 yards, but the passing game still needs a lot of improvement, especially when it comes to protecting Brissett.

The Patriots have limited time to fix these problems as they travel to New York to face the Jets on Thursday in Week 3.
