Cincinnati Bengals suffer heartbreaking 26-25 loss to Chiefs

KANSAS-CITY — The Bengals led for most of the game but eventually lost 26-25 to the Chiefs at Arrowhead on Sunday. Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to the game-winning point.

The Chiefs faced a 4th-and-16 attempt from their own 35-yard line with 38 seconds left. Mahomes threw the ball to Rashee Rice and Bengals rookie Daijah Anthony hit Rice a half-second early. The pass interference penalty gave the Chiefs new offensive attempts and put them within field goal range.

Harrison Butler kicked a 51-yard field goal to give Kansas City the win. The Bengals are 0-2 this season. Here are our postgame observations:

Big decision

The Bengals faced a fourth-and-goal at the three-yard line with 2:22 left in the third quarter, trailing 17-16.

Zac Taylor was aggressive and went all out. Burrow calmly found Andrei Iosivas for his second touchdown of the game, giving Cincinnati a 22-17 lead.

Iosivas finished with two catches for seven yards and two touchdowns. Burrow completed 23 of 36 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns.

Sales

The Bengals forced three turnovers, including two interceptions by Patrick Mahomes.

Akeem Davis-Gaither opened the game with an interception late in the first quarter. Seven plays later, the Bengals scored a touchdown. Then Sheldon Rankins knocked the ball away from Carson Steele and Germaine Pratt recovered it.

The Bengals scored 10 points from turnovers, but were unable to capitalize on every opportunity.

Cam Taylor-Britt made an amazing interception early in the fourth quarter. Watch the one-handed catch here.

HUGE moment

It looked like the Bengals offense would pick up where it left off after the Taylor-Britt interception, but Mike Gesicki dropped a completely open pass on the first attempt. Then Chris Jones recognized a block and forced Burrow to throw the ball away.

The Chiefs’ star defensive tackle got free up the middle on third down. Burrow was forced out of the pocket and dropped the ball as he tried to run up the field. Chamarri Conner scooped up the ball and ran it for a 38-yard touchdown that gave Kansas City a 23-22 lead.

The Bengals finished the season +2 in turnovers.

Key penalty

Ja’Marr Chase was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after being tackled by Trent McDuffie in the fourth quarter. Instead of a 3rd-and-7, the Bengals had a 3rd-and-22 from the Chiefs’ 45-yard line.

Burrow found Gesicki for a 10-yard gain to set up McPherson to give the Bengals the lead. The fourth-year kicker converted a 53-yard attempt to give Cincinnati a 25-23 lead.

Game Destroyer

Trey Hendrickson finished with four tackles (two for loss), two sacks and three quarterback hits.

The Bengals’ star edge rusher helped force both of the Chiefs’ punts, including a key sack of Mahomes that forced Kansas City to punt with 7:08 left in the fourth quarter.

Tight end production

The Bengals relied on their tight ends on Sunday, opening the game with Drew Sample, Erick All and Mike Gesicki on the field.

The trio caught 12 of 14 attempts and gained 142 yards. Gesicki led the way with six passes caught for 87 yards.
