As is often the case in races for two-year-olds at Del Mar, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert is in the lead. This time it is the 54th edition of the Grade 3 Preferably Buddy Missions with the conditioner apparently in the driver’s seat with a Curlin Colt named Getaway car for the Sunday feature.

Getaway Car, a $700,000 yearling owned by the multi-partner group run by Gavin Murphy’s SF Racing and Jack and Laurie Wolf’s Starlight Racing, will start on the outside in a small field of five horses in the six-furlong, $150,000 test, with the youngster a notable 3-5 favorite.

Getaway Car has only run once, but it was a great start. On opening day on July 20, he showed his speed in the five-furlong race at Del Mar and never looked back, winning by 3 1/2 lengths. Del Mar’s leading rider, Juan Hernández, was in action that day, as he will be on Sunday. He has returned to action twice since then, and should be ready for another big performance.

White Sands, entered by trainer Wesley Ward in the Sorrento (G3), sat out Saturday’s race and will race the boys on Sunday. She has a lot to offer. The mare by Into Mischief has run twice before and won both times in superb fashion. Her first race was at Belterra Park in Cincinnati, where she beat a field of young horses by nearly 10 lengths on May 25. Then she returned six weeks later at Prairie Meadows in Iowa and beat the boys by nearly 14 lengths in a small stakes race.

Kazushi Kimura made the decision for the brown mare, Preferably Buddy.

The Preferably Buddy will be race 3 in Sunday’s 10-race schedule, starting at 5:58 p.m. EDT.
