Selena Gomez mocked Steve Martin and Martin Short at the 2024 Emmys with a joke about a childless cat lady

Selena Gomez effortlessly dropped a joke about a childless cat lady at the 2024 Emmys, just days after her best friend Taylor Swift signed a presidential ad for Kamala Harris with the now infamous JD Vance phrase.

At the Emmys, which took place on Sunday, September 15 in Los Angeles, Gomez was together with her Only murders in the building Co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short present the first award of the evening, for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Anyone who has seen the series, which is nominated for a whopping 21 Emmys this year, knows that these three talk well together and have chemistry for days – that was clearly visible at the ceremony.

“What a magical night, it was incredible remembering people’s names,” Gomez began. Short added, “And we pretend we’ve seen their shows.” And Martin concluded, “And when I see an actor I don’t know, I just say, ‘I loved your scene with Nicole Kidman,’ and nine times out of ten I’m right.”

Martin and Short exchanged their usual banter: “Steve, I just want to say what an honor it is to work with someone who looks like he fell down and can’t get up.” “And I also want to say what an honor it is to work with someone who looks like a former tennis champion.”

But then Gomez spoke up: “And let me tell you, what an honor it is to work with two guys who are so far from being childless cat ladies.”

The joke, of course, refers to the now widely derided words of vice presidential candidate JD Vance. “We are basically run in this country, whether it’s the Democrats, whether it’s our corporate oligarchs, by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are unhappy with their own lives and the choices they’ve made and therefore want to make the rest of the country unhappy as well,” he told Tucker Carlson in 2021.

Democrats and supporters of Kamala Harris have since reclaimed the phrase, most famously last week when Taylor Swift endorsed Harris on Instagram, writing, “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes that I believe need a warrior to represent them. I find her to be a calm, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country when we are led by calm, not chaos.” She signed her letter, “Taylor Swift, childless cat lady.”
