Selena Gomez made a joke about a childless cat lady at the Emmys as a reference to Taylor Swift

While Taylor Swift celebrated the big win of Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, Selena Gomez winked at her close friend at the Emmys. Gomez was the first presenter of the evening with her Only murders in the building Co-Stars Martin Short and Steve Martin. The trio joked around with each other, with Gomez dropping a witty comment about a “childless cat lady,” just days after Swift used the term in her endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance, of course, made headlines in 2021 for calling that statement an insult. According to NPR, he said at the time that the country was run by Democrats, corporate oligarchs and “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are unhappy with their own lives and the choices they’ve made and therefore want to make the rest of the country unhappy too.” His remarks resurfaced after he was nominated as Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate – including at the Emmys.

In the middle of her presentation with Martin and Short, Gomez teased them. “And let me tell you, what an honor it is to work with two guys who are so far from being childless cat ladies,” she said after stifling her laughter.

Swift also used Vance’s insult to sign her support for Harris on Instagram. She wrote:

I will be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes that I believe need a champion to represent them. I think she is a calm, gifted leader and believe we can accomplish so much more in this country when we are led by calm, not chaos. I was so encouraged and impressed by her choice of her running mate @timwalz, who has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and women’s rights to their own bodies for decades.

I’ve done my research and made my choice. Your research is entirely up to you and your choice is yours. I want to say to first-time voters in particular: remember that you have to be registered to vote! I also find it much easier to vote early. In my story, I link to where you can register and give you dates and information on early voting.

With love and hope,
