iOS 18 or iOS 17 new update for your iPhone? Before you click “Upgrade”, you should know the following

iOS 18 or iOS 17 new update for your iPhone? Before you click “Upgrade”, you should know the following

In a major announcement, Apple has given iPhone users a new choice: they can stay on iOS 17 and continue to receive security updates, or upgrade to the newly released iOS 18. This option comes as Apple prepares to release iOS 18 to the public on September 16 after unveiling the iPhone 16 series at the Glowtime event. Although iOS 18 brings a host of new features, some users may prefer to delay the upgrade to avoid initial bugs or app compatibility issues.

Security patches for iOS 17 will continue

According to a report by 9to5Mac, Apple will offer iPhone users the option to stay on iOS 17 and still receive important security patches. The tech giant has already made the iOS 17.7 Release Candidate (RC) available to developers and beta testers along with the iOS 18 RC. Although iOS 17.7 doesn’t introduce any new features, it does include important security fixes and bug fixes, making it a safe option for those hesitant about upgrading.

This dual-release strategy isn’t new. Last year, after the launch of iOS 17, Apple continued to offer security patches for iOS 16, albeit for a limited period of time. Likewise, iOS 17 users will continue to receive security updates until Apple ends support in the coming months. However, iOS 18 will be compatible with all devices currently running iOS 17, so support for the older version will eventually end.

“Apple’s strategy of offering both the latest, fully-featured version and an older version with security patches demonstrates its commitment to user security and flexibility,” the tech analysts said. This move is particularly helpful for users who rely on certain apps that may not yet be fully compatible with iOS 18. This allows them to wait to upgrade and still protect their devices from security vulnerabilities.

iOS 18 brings new features, but some have to wait

For users who decide to upgrade, iOS 18 promises several exciting new features. These include improved Home screen customization, a redesigned Control Center, improved Siri functionality, and the introduction of Apple Intelligence, a feature designed to improve device performance. However, users who continue to use iOS 17 will miss out on these updates until they decide to upgrade.

In addition to iOS 18, Apple will also release updates across its entire software ecosystem. Next week, users can expect the release of iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, tvOS 18, visionOS 2, and macOS Sequoia alongside iOS 18, creating a unified update across all Apple devices. For iPhone users who are eager to try iOS 18 but fear potential bugs on release day, the decision to stick with iOS 17 with security patches is a useful middle ground. Apple has already done this, and for users who rely on their iPhone for work or important daily tasks, waiting to upgrade until the initial bugs are ironed out could be the deciding factor.

How do I update?

The latest iOS updates are available in the Settings app under General > Software Update, giving users a choice. Whether they opt for the latest features or play it safe and take advantage of ongoing security updates, iPhone users have control over how and when they update their devices.

Apple’s iPhone 16 series, available in India starting at Rs 79,900, will also be available for pre-order from September 13. This new lineup and its accompanying software updates represent another important step in Apple’s continuous drive for innovation, always keeping user safety at the forefront.
