The wife of a jailed banker who was made the UK’s first Unexplained Assets Disclosure Order (UWO) has been ordered to hand over a golf club in Berkshire and a £14 million house in Knightsbridge.

Zamira Hajiyeva, the 16 million pounds at Harrods in a decadeagreed to give up the properties following a six-year investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Ms Hajiyeva’s husband, Jahangir, was chairman of the state-controlled International Bank of Azerbaijan from 2001 until his resignation in 2015.

He is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence in the country on charges including fraud and embezzlement.

The NCA found that the assets were “the direct result of large-scale fraud and embezzlement, accounting fraud and money laundering.”

It said it had found “no reasonable explanation” for the origin of the funds used to purchase the two.

The golf club is said to be the Mill Ride Golf Club in Ascot.

Ms Hajiyeva was the first person to be subject to a UWO, a power of attorney that came into force in January 2018 under the so-called McMafia Laws.

They were named after the BBC drama about organised crime and the book by journalist Misha Glenny, which served as inspiration for the drama.

The NCA applied for an order to seize ownership of the two assets in March 2021 and a civil recovery action in the High Court in June 2023.

On August 1, the civil seizure order was issued, resulting in the loss of 70% of the value of both properties.
