Arrests, tear gas and broken windows during protests in Montreal’s Village

As protesters marched in Montreal Village on Saturday night, two men were arrested, tear gas was used, and the windows of a Starbucks were smashed.

The Montreal Police (SPVM) reported that the march, organized by Rad Pride (Radical Pride), began at 9:30 p.m. and ended after 11:00 p.m.

At the height of Montreal Pride Week, protesters marched down Ste. Catherine Street East between Beaudry Street and Papineau Avenue, celebrating the city’s LGBTQ2S+ community.

SPVM spokeswoman Veronique Dubuc confirmed that a 29-year-old man was arrested for an armed attack on a police officer and a 26-year-old man was arrested for an assault on a police officer.

Both men were released on a promise to appear in court.

None of the officers were injured.

Dubuc added that police used tear gas against some of the protesters.

No arrests were made for the vandalism at Starbucks and other stores, but those acts are being investigated, Dubuc said.

According to police, neither demonstrators nor other citizens were injured.

Dubuc added that there will be an increased police presence at the Montreal Pride Parade on Sunday.
