Section of US 17 in Brunswick County closed and further traffic disruptions due to flooding

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Several roads are closed and traffic is impacted in the Wilmington area Monday morning due to heavy rain.

Brunswick County

The Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire Department and the North Carolina Department of Transportation report that US 17 (Ocean Highway West) is closed in both directions near Sellers Road.

A portion of NC 211 is also closed, as is a portion of US 74 in Columbus County.

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the following roads are closed:

Southport

Due to road damage, authorities have closed all access roads to through traffic and non-essential traffic.

Road closures provided by the City of Southport effective Monday afternoon:

  • NC 211 at Duke Progress Canal between Walmart and Dosher Cutoff due to a road collapse and a burst water main. The road is closed in both directions until further notice.
  • E. Moore Street near the Turtlewood and Harbor Oaks subdivisions due to a road collapse. The road is closed in both directions until further notice.
  • 500 block of E. Moore Street due to a partial collapse. The road is open to traffic, but use extreme caution.
  • NC 211 at Executive Park Blvd (near St. James) has collapsed. The road is closed in both directions until further notice.

Other incidents in Southport include:

  • W. 11. at Lord and Caswell
  • Leonard St corner Jabbertown Rd
  • E. 11th at Brunswick Apartments
  • Robert Ruark on Southport Way
  • Fodale Ave at N. Howe, entrance to Dosher Memorial Hospital
  • W. 12. from Howe to Caswell
  • Cades Cove on 14th Street

Carolina Beach

The City of Carolina Beach advises its residents to avoid driving while flooding continues throughout the city.

Oak Island

The bridge to Oak Island was closed. Status as of 11:30 a.m.:

  • E Oak Island Drive at SE 51st Street is closed
  • The northbound lane of Long Beach Road is closed
  • The 3400 block of NC 211 (near Pine Forest) is closed

County of Bladen

The Elwell Ferry is closed until Monday 23 September due to high water.
