Andy Dalton takes over as starter

Andy Dalton takes over as starter

As the players filed into the locker room on Monday afternoon, they had a while to process the change and Canales’ call to “give Andy the same support that we have going into this week. That the guys are supportive and approach things with the same energy every day.”

Safety Nick Scott, who has been in the league since 2019 and is now on his third team, has experienced transition before. The Rams made the playoffs three times while Scott was in Los Angeles and won a Super Bowl. But that victory was followed by a 5-12 season. So Scott — like so many in the locker room — knows what happens when things get stalled.

“There are changes, especially when you hit tough times,” Scott said. “Any position group, any player, regardless of their role, can be in that position.”

It was a reiteration of Canales’ earlier statement that it is his job to evaluate every position and that “that is the case at the quarterback position, so it is heavily loaded.”

But as Scott further explained, “There’s turnover. People get hired, people get fired, people get replaced, all that stuff.”

“We see that wherever we go and have seen that for a number of years now. So the mentality of the guys in this group is to arrive on Wednesday ready to work, ready to do our job first and then trust the coaches to make the necessary decisions to put us in a position to be successful on Sunday.”

And right now the decision is to use Dalton as the starting quarterback.
