Closures in the district

  • Brunswick County Government will be closed effective immediately beginning Monday, September 16, due to severe weather impacts from potential Tropical Cyclone #8. All Brunswick County Government offices, libraries, parks and other facilities will reopen to their regular hours of operation on Tuesday, September 17, unless additional closures or schedule changes are necessary.
  • The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners meeting scheduled for September 16 has also been cancelled and will be tentatively postponed to a later date to be determined.
  • The Brunswick County Landfill and Convenience Centers will also be closed Monday. Customers who pick up curbside trash and recycle on Monday will now receive a pickup on Saturday, Sept. 21. Anyone with questions about their trash can pickup should contact GFL Environmental at 910.253.4177.

Brunswick County and the National Weather Service in Wilmington are monitoring potential Tropical Cyclone 8. The broad low pressure system will continue to weaken and conditions will improve across the area through tonight (Monday, September 16).

  • Minor coastal flooding and some beach erosion, particularly at high tide this evening.
  • All beaches experience strong rip currents and rough surf.
  • Gusty winds (30 to 40 mph), mainly associated with thunderstorms.
  • Additional rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, mostly north of the Lumberton-Wilmington border, and 1 to 2 inches possible in parts of the Pee Dee region from near Bennettsville to Darlington and Florence.
  • Even though the rain has stopped, floodwaters will continue to accumulate in low-lying areas with poor drainage, so exercise extra caution when travelling through the area tonight.
  • Isolated tornadoes are possible through this evening, especially north of the Elizabethtown-Wilmington border into the early evening hours.
