Bill Belichick praises the “magical journey” of the 2014 Patriots team

Bill Belichick is slowly getting the hang of posting on Instagram and posted a tribute to the 2014 Patriots team before New England’s first home game against the Seattle Seahawks.

“Congratulations to all the players, coaches and staff of our incredible 2014 team,” the post said. “You did everything at a championship level – small things in everyday life that no one from the outside saw, and big things, legendary things under pressure that the whole world could see. The playoffs were unforgettable – two 14-point deficits against the Ravens – a total dominance by the Colts – and a stunning victory in Arizona against the reigning Super Bowl champions. I am forever grateful for the great team effort and for all the Patriots fans who supported us with so much enthusiasm. We all shared a magical journey together.”

That season, of course, ended with the Patriots’ victory over the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX after Malcolm Butler intercepted then-quarterback Russell Wilson’s pass at the goal line. Butler rang the bell on Gillette Stadium’s lighthouse before kickoff.

The AFC Championship Game that Belichick was referring to was also the beginning of Deflategate. The Colts complained that the balls used in the AFCCG were not sufficiently inflated. This led to an investigation that lasted over a year and then-quarterback Tom Brady was suspended for four games for his role in the scandal. It was a long, drawn-out process that even ended up in the US courts.

Although he is no longer nominated for the 2024 coaching position after parting ways with Belichick and the Patriots earlier this year, the 72-year-old has been busy with a number of media appearances.
