Somerville artists exhibit their works at the citywide Yart sale

SOMERVILLE, Massachusetts. (WBZ NewsRadio) – The Somerville Arts Council transformed the city’s streets into an open-air art gallery on Saturday.

More than 60 Somerville-based artists have signed up for the council’s citywide Yart Sale, a flea market where clocks, chairs, pots and pans are replaced with every kind of art imaginable.

“Biker vegetables,” Ryan said, holding up a black-and-white illustration of souped-up vegetables she’d bought from an artist in Union Square. “Yeah, they just look cool and it’s a cucumber and a carrot smoking a cigarette, I don’t know.”

Kat bought a necklace with an owl pendant. She told WBZ NewsRadio that while it’s fun to get out and look at the art, the connections you make with your neighbors are just as important.

“Yeah, it was just really fun to see people in the community and talk to so many people you wouldn’t have otherwise talked to,” Kat said.

It was the fourth year in a row for the Yart Sale, but the first year for artist Abby.

“I do different, colorful, character-based artwork,” Abby said. “I have fun, silly characters or food with faces and stuff like that, and I like to print them on all kinds of little products for people.”

Abby enjoyed showing her illustrations to passersby, even in the warm weather on Saturday.

“I think it’s pretty hot today, so maybe not as busy as some years, but there’s quite a bit of traffic and the people who come are really friendly,” Abby said.
