The big twist in The Umbrella Academy Season 4 was the Abigail was the one who made the cleansing possible by giving the Hargreeves the jar of marigolds so they could regain their powers, leading them to Jennifer, and making sure no one stopped the purification. Abigail explained to Reginald that she felt guilty for creating the Marigold and Durango particlesand their death was their punishment.

In this conversation The Umbrella Academy also confirmed that These particles destroyed Abigail and Reginald’s home planetwhich only increased her guilt. The provocation of the Purge was Abigail’s way of making things right, as she also felt she shouldn’t have been brought back to life. Reginald listened and understood her motives, and they were simply waiting to be devoured by the Ben/Jennifer Purge Monster.
