ASCENSION PARISH, La. (WAFB) – President Biden has granted Governor Jeff Landry’s request to declare a disaster following Hurricane Francine. Ascension Parish is on the list of included parishes.

Nearly a week after it made landfall, many people in the Ascension Parish area are still cleaning up their yards, but emergency crews will soon be ready to clear roadside debris.
“We are reviewing the need and the schedule and once we discuss that with our contractor, we will announce it to the public so you know when pickup is expected to occur at your home,” said Rachael Wilkinson, OHSEP director for Ascension Parish.
Other parishes affected in the statement include Assumption, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary and Terrebonne, all of which will receive assistance to pay for cleanup efforts.
Wilkinson says emergency crews will be driving around Tuesday to assess debris damage and hope to have a cleanup schedule in Ascension Parish by Wednesday.
“It was wind damage, so it was all over the place, and that’s the result of today’s assessments. The waters will be assessed with drone footage today and tomorrow, and then we’ll have a few people driving around in vehicles and looking at the road debris,” Wilkinson added.
Wilkinson recommends that everyone be prepared for pickup time.
“The most important thing with construction waste is to separate the piles. We want all the branches, twigs, bushes and plant debris that come from your yard in one pile, and if you have fencing, building materials, demolition material or roofing material, that needs to be in a separate pile,” Wilkinson explained.
She also adds that they will not collect household waste. They will not collect anything that is in a black bag. And if a bag is required, it must be transparent.
