Rock singer, hitmaker and actor dies at the age of 78

JD Souther died on Tuesday, according to several reports.

He was 78.

Variety reported that Souther’s representatives did not give a cause of death but said he died peacefully at home.

Don’t know Souther’s name? Rock music fans should, as he was known as a co-writer of some of the Eagles’ biggest hits, including “New Kid in Town” and “Best of My Love.”

According to Variety, Souther also had a solid singing career of his own, even recording a top 10 hit, “You’re Only Lonely.” That career lasted until five days ago, according to the website, when Southern took the stage to perform.

Souther also wrote songs for Linda Ronstadt, the Chicks, George Strait and Bonnie Rait, as well as a long list of songs with the Eagles.

When asked if it bothered him that the Eagles had big hits with his songs, he replied to Creative Independent: “Would you like to see the checks?”

“Even Glenn Frey once said – and he was kind of joking because he knows how royalties work – he said, ‘One of the reasons JD didn’t have a major solo career is because he gave most of his songs to us or Linda Ronstadt,'” Souther said in the same interview. “And that’s kind of true. The closest I got to being really famous was during the ‘You’re Only Lonely’ phase, and honestly, I didn’t like that very much. In some ways, it’s a relief, but it doesn’t pay quite as well.”

As his career in music progressed, Souther was asked to try his hand at acting, which led to a role on the series “Thirtysomething” and several other roles, including a seven-episode role on “Nashville” from 2012 to 2017.

Souther was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.
