There’s a saying in baseball that says every day you see something new. On Tuesday, that was Jose Altuve’s foot.

An already dramatic game between the Houston Astros and the San Diego Padres took a strange turn early in the ninth inning when the Astros All-Star was at bat, a runner was on second base, two outs occurred and the score was 3-3.

Facing Padres relief pitcher Robert Suarez, Altuve hit a grounder to third base that would have ended the inning. However, Altuve did not complete the play because he signaled to home plate umpire Brennan Miller that he had hit the ball with his foot before entering the field. If that was true, it should have been ruled a foul ball.

Altuve began to make his point to Miller, and soon Astros manager Joe Espada joined him. Altuve seemed to leave the discussion to his manager, but it turned out he was just preparing a, er, visual aid for Miller by removing both the shoe and sock of his left foot.

This earned him a quick ejection from Miller. Espada was also thrown out of the game at the beginning of the ninth inning.

Another replay showed that Altuve was actually right, in case you thought he was just pretending to be so angry that he partially undressed. The ball clearly bounced off the toe of his left shoe before finding its way to Padres third baseman Manny Machado.

We’ve seen some strange ejections this season, most notably when an umpire mistook a fan yelling at him for New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone, but this one might win the award for strangest ejection.

What makes this even crazier is that this is only the second time this season that Altuve has been ejected for arguing with the umpires after they called him out for a grounder that actually hit his foot, ending an inning. Almost the same thing, minus the foot exposure, happened in July.

That may have been why Altuve was particularly frustrated on Tuesday. Those two incidents are two of three ejections in his 14-year career.

The game went into overtime, where the Astros again had trouble with the umpires. Houston led 4-3 until the bottom of the 10th inning, but the Padres got runners on the corners and two outs. Astros relief pitcher Hector Neris threw his first pitch to Jurickson Profar so far in that it was ruled a hit-by-pitch.

Again, the replay showed the umpires were wrong. Again, the Astros had to deal with it. Their dugout was visibly frustrated when the decision was confirmed on the field. Even Profar seemed confused as he stepped onto his base, bringing the winning run to second base.

The Astros responded by forcing a game-winning groundout from Manny Machado that might have won the game had it hit Neris’ foot.
