Nebraska Volleyball sweeps Stanford in top-5 showdown

Life is still very good if you are a Nebraska volleyball fan.

Most Nebraska fans would have been thrilled with a win against No. 2 Stanford on Wednesday. They pulled off a sweep.

No. 5 Nebraska started strong, held on during a bad stretch in the second set and won 25-17, 25-22 and 25-14 at the Devaney Sports Center.

And now Nebraska has won 31 straight home games in three seasons, the longest such streak in the country. The streak includes wins against No. 1 (Wisconsin in 2023) and No. 2 (Stanford) teams.

Stanford was undefeated and had already won two games against last season’s Final Four teams – Texas and Wisconsin.

Not only did two of the most successful programs in the history of the sport meet (40 Final Four appearances between them), but also programs that are still at the top.

The arena was bustling early on and remained bustling at the end when Nebraska took a 22-10 lead in the third set against the No. 2 team in the country.

Nebraska finished with a batting average of .263 and held Stanford to .100.

Andi Jackson had a great season with nine kills and a .600 batting average. She also had five blocks. Lindsay Krause’s nine kills included the match point shot into the back corner. Merritt Beason had eight kills and Harper Murray had six.

Elia Rubin led Stanford with 10 kills.

Jackson was particularly good towards the end of the first and second sets, scoring kills to win long rallies.

Nebraska caused a stir in the arena early in the match, taking an 8-2 lead in the first set. Nebraska’s serve was good and the Huskers scored five kills on their first nine shot attempts.

Nebraska committed only one hitting error and was not blocked on its first 23 attempts. At the same time, Stanford committed errors, both hitting and two serving errors.

Stanford closed the gap to six late in the set, but Jackson landed back-to-kills on the slide attack, squashing any chance of a comeback. Nebraska won 25-17.

Stanford got going again midway through the second set when Elia Rubin served two aces for a 7-0 lead, taking a 10-8 lead. But Nebraska was able to pull even with kills from Jackson. Krause had the kill on set point and Nebraska led the match 2-0.
