ALARM DAY: Severe thunderstorms possible Thursday afternoon to evening – ABC 6 News

TODAY WARNING DAY for the “Weather First” region!

A cold front is expected later this afternoon and/or into the evening, bringing with it the possibility of thunderstorms, some of which could be strong to severe.

Across the Weather First area, there is a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms later today, which could bring large hail, damaging winds, and possibly even the odd isolated tornado.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to occur between 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. CDT, but some thunderstorms may occur an hour or two before or after, depending on location and the speed of the cold front’s passage.

A less severe spell of rain and thunderstorms is expected over the next few hours before the cold front clears in the Dakotas. Expect only a few brief showers/heavy downpours this morning/early afternoon.

The second round is expected to arrive between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. CDT, when the heat of the day and humidity will provide ample fuel for a strong thunderstorm to develop. This round is expected to affect our area until about 9:00 or 10:00 p.m., after which the cold front will move east and calm weather will move in from the west.

If you are outdoors this afternoon and into the evening, be sure to check the latest weather reports and keep an eye on Interactive Radar. We will post all warnings and advisories here on kaaltv.com, on TV and on our ABC 6 News app.
