Thursday Night Football Jets vs. Patriots: Fantasy Football Analysis

Thursday Night Football Jets vs. Patriots: Fantasy Football Analysis

You can watch Thursday Night Football: Jets vs. Patriots at 8:20 p.m. ET/5:20 p.m. PT on Amazon Prime.

Thursday Night Football remains in the AFC East for the second week in a row as the Patriots travel to MetLife Stadium to face the Jets. Gang Green fans (and Breece Hall/Garrett Wilson fantasy football managers) will no doubt be hoping for a better first drive in the home opener for Aaron Rodgers and the offense than they will in 2023. *shudder*.

While the Jets and Patriots haven’t exactly played many exciting fantasy wonderland games—the last high-scoring game was in 2021, when New England crushed New York 54-13—there are still some big names and fantasy nuances to keep an eye on in this matchup.

There was some discussion among the committee following the Jets’ Week 2 win over the Titans. Rookie running back Braelon Allen scored 18.6 fantasy points thanks to two touchdowns – just 2.3 fewer than Hall scored that day. Fantasy managers were confused as to why Hall was subbed out on the plays where Allen scored, as both plays looked like they could have been Hall’s to shine on. Could the Jets try to run a two-pronged attack in the backfield?

I’m not buying it.

With Christian McCaffrey unable to play, Hall is potentially one of the top three running backs in the NFL – a jack of all trades who can perform in any situation. You don’t just take the ball out of a player like that.

In fact, it’s probably a good thing for Hall and his fantasy managers that Allen is getting a bit of a spotlight. With injuries rife around the league, is it really that bad for Hall to miss a few games, especially when he’s already coming off a season-ending injury? And for all the whining, Hall Despite it scored 20.90 fantasy points, with his catch looking more like CeeDee Lamb than an RB. Not to mention that Hall had 42 touches in two weeks, while Allen only had 11.

Count me on team “You can’t complain about a player scoring more than 20 fantasy points.”

TLS, DR: This whole thing should be less about “Is Breece Hall at risk of a committee appearance” and more about “adding Braelon Allen (32% of the roster) everywhere.”

This definitely looks like the kind of game where you have to start your stars and cover your eyes — that means Hall, Garrett Wilson and Rhamondre Stevenson stay in the lineup — but we have to acknowledge that Hunter Henry (48% on the roster) had a 100-yard game in Week 2. Unless you’ve been following Brock Bowers (seemingly the only big name of the season), George Kittle (last week), Isaiah Likely (Week 1) or Trey McBride (saved by a fumble recovery touchdown last week), you’ve probably been bemoaning your TE spot so far.

So why not give Henry a chance if you don’t have the position?

The gap between Henry and the Patriots’ next leading receiver is significant. The TE leads the team in catches (10), yardage (127), targets (15) – and shoot, he even leads the team in YAC. Sure, the majority of that performance came in Week 2, but the way this season is going, we have to take data seriously every week. Not to mention, the Patriots’ offense has been a bit more aggressive so far this season than probably anyone expected. If they want to win this game, they’ll probably look in Henry’s direction first when they go up in the air.

This is obviously a tough matchup, but Henry’s tight end position seems more secure than ever this season. Use him if you need help at TE this week.

The rookie receiver is only on the roster in 12% of leagues and could be worth a speculative signing before this game. The Patriots have claimed they want to get Polk more involved in the offense, and we saw Polk score his first touchdown in Week 2. It’s possible his workload could be increased even further in a divisional game.

In the worst case, Polk’s workload decreases while the Patriots try to ruin the Jets and you end up dropping him anyway. But there are upsides here and I’d rather be early than late.
