Michael Madsen has filed for divorce from his estranged wife DeAnna Madsen after 28 years of marriage.
According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Kill Bill The 66-year-old actor cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, claiming they split shortly after the suicide of their 26-year-old son Hudson on January 25, 2022.
The documents, dated Tuesday, September 17, were filed in a Los Angeles court and stated that the couple married on April 15, 1996.
In a statement signed by Madsen and attached to the motion as part of the suit, the star accused his estranged wife of driving their son to suicide “through her neglect, drinking and alcoholism” and insisted that the “irreconcilable differences” he had listed “do not adequately describe the divorce petition.”

Madsen, who is being represented in the lawsuit by his longtime attorney Perry Wander, has filed for a domestic violence restraining order, according to documents, and has also denied the domestic violence charge DeAnna filed against him last month.
“The defendant has also contributed significantly to my personal problems. I am the victim of an abusive, dependent and toxic relationship that culminated in the defendant breaking into my home and having me wrongfully arrested for domestic violence,” Madsen’s statement continued.
Representatives for Madsen did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
The divorce filing comes after PEOPLE reported that Madsen was taken into custody in the early hours of Saturday, August 17, after being arrested under California Penal Code Section 243(e)(1), which provides for assault on a spouse, according to online records. His bail was set at $20,000. Then on Monday, August 19, PEOPLE confirmed that a spokesperson had indicated the actor had returned home.
Later in the week, the star’s lawyer, Wander The Hollywood Reporter that Madsen had “confronted” his estranged wife and “asked” her to leave the house, adding at the time that this was “an ongoing problem.”
“Michael has shown tremendous compassion and restraint toward his estranged wife during this time,” Wander continued. “He is definitely not guilty of domestic violence.”
DeAnna responded, “Michael is struggling with his own personal issues. I and our children have supported him to the best of our ability. We ask for privacy at this time,” DeAnna said. THR.

Madsen had previously addressed the death of her son Hudson in a statement, which she shared with The Los Angeles Times in January.
“I am shocked because my son, who I spoke to just a few days ago, said he was happy – my last text from him was ‘I love you, daddy,'” the actor said in a statement to the outlet.
“I haven’t noticed any signs of depression. It’s so tragic and sad. I’m just trying to understand everything and comprehend what happened,” he added at the time.
“He had the typical financial challenges that people have in life, but he wanted a family. He was looking to the future, so it’s overwhelming. I just can’t comprehend what happened,” Madsen continued.
According to social media, Hudson lived in Hawaii with his wife Carlie. They are said to have moved to the island of Oahu in 2019.
Madsen and DeAnna also have sons together, Calvin (27) and Luke (18), while the actor is father to sons Christian (34) and Max (30) from a previous relationship with Jeannine Bisignano.
