England vs Australia: Travis Head century takes tourists to victory in first ODI

Travis Head scored an unbeaten 154 and Australia secured a convincing seven-wicket victory over England in the first One-Day International at Trent Bridge.

After England collapsed from 213-2 to 315, Head’s superb innings helped Australia score the runs with 36 balls to spare.

The 30-year-old opening batsman made an unbroken 148 along with Marnus Labuschagne to make it the highest ODI score by an Australian batsman in England and lead the tourists to their highest successful ODI chase in England.

With this comprehensive victory, the world champions extend their winning streak in ODIs to 13 after taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Thanks to a fine knock of 95 from opener Ben Duckett and Will Jacks’ third ODI half-century, England were in a good position to threaten this winning streak, but collapsed towards the end of the innings.

Part-time spinner Labuschagne had Duckett caught and bowled just below his century-mark and then removed Harry Brook, captaining England for the first time, in his next over to start the hosts’ downfall.

Labuschagne and Adam Zampa took three wickets each in his 100th ODI, while Australia bowled only spin in the last 18 overs of the innings and England’s innings fell apart.

Jacob Bethell showed his talent again as he scored a handy 35 points to take the home team over the 300-point mark, but they fell well short of their expectations on a course known for its high scoring performance.

Head had a moment of luck when he was bowled by Brydon Carse for six, despite what would have been a stunning one-handed catch, but he never looked back as he smashed his way to a fantastic sixth ODI ton and cruised Australia to victory with ease.

England will look to level the series in their second match at Headingley on Saturday.
