Ray of hope for Patriots rookie in overtime loss to Seahawks

Ray of hope for Patriots rookie in overtime loss to Seahawks

Rhamondre Stevenson had another nice day on Sunday after leading the Patriots to a season-opening win, but New England’s lead receiver wasn’t the team’s best runner in Week 2.

That honor goes to Antonio Gibson, who rushed for 96 yards at Gillette Stadium, leading all runners. The dual-threat back was responsible for a play that could have decided the game: a 45-yard run to the Seattle 25-yard line when New England had a three-point lead with about seven minutes left. Unfortunately for Gibson and the Patriots, they couldn’t put the game on ice and the Seahawks cruised to a 23-20 overtime victory.

Still, Gibson’s performance was encouraging for a New England team that will rely on the running game for the time being. The 26-year-old took some of the pressure off Stevenson and made the most of his opportunities, averaging nearly 9 yards per run. It would obviously be unfair to expect Gibson to get 100 yards every week, but early signs suggest he will be a productive No. 2 in the Patriots’ backfield.

Not surprisingly, Gibson was one of the “stars” highlighted by NESN.com’s Sean McGuire, along with George Balekji, on the latest episode of “Foxboro Rush.” The pair praised two other productive players from Sunday’s game, but also lamented three “duds” by New England in the first loss of the young season.
