Jasprit Bumrah’s artistry seemed beyond comprehension for an out-of-form Bangladesh batting line-up as India took complete control of the opening Test with a total lead of 308 runs at the end of the second day’s play. Bumraj (4/50), in the company of Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep (2/19) and Ravindra Jadeja, worked his magic again as Bangladesh replied with a paltry 149 runs to India’s 376 runs in the first innings.

With a lead of 227 runs, India finished second at 81 for 3 with Shubman Gill (33 batting) and Rishabh Pant (12 batting) in bat. The remaining six Bangladesh wickets were shared by rookie Akash Deep (2/19), experienced Ravindra Jadeja (2/19) and Mohammed Siraj (2/30).

The start of the second innings for India, however, was not a bright one as they lost captain Rohit Sharma (5) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) with 28 on the board. Rohit was forced to play a slightly short ball from Taskin Ahmed and the resulting lead ended with Zakir Hasan in the gully. Jaiswal succumbed to the temptation to go wide after pacer Nahid Rana bowled a full pitch after a few short balls. But the 28 for two was not really worrying considering the sizeable lead India had built up in the first innings by then. However, they needed to consolidate immediately to further tighten their grip.

Gill took the third wicket in the company of Virat Kohli (17, 37 balls) and scored 39 runs. Gill played some beautiful shots on both sides of the pitch, generating tremendous power and timing with his trademark minimal-sweep approach to the bat. A short-arm jab through cover from Rana to the boundary was the right-hander’s standout shot of the day, but Kohli’s dismissal, leg before, to spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz, later in the day put a damper on things for India.

If Kohli had taken the DRS, he would have saved his wicket and India could have been in a much better position for Day 3. After a brief discussion with non-batsman Shubman Gill, Kohli decided not to take the review and walked back to the pavilion. However, a moment later, the cameraman showed on the screen that Kohli had stolen the ball on its way to his pads and it was seen on ultra edge. The reaction of captain Rohit Sharma as well as the umpire and Shubman Gill went viral a moment later. Check out the reactions below…

However, on a day when a total of 17 wickets fell, Bumrah was, as usual, the best player. (Rishabh Pant’s apologetic gesture to angry Mohammed Siraj after DRS error, video goes viral – watch)

The quick one came into his element immediately and gave India the first breakthrough by taking out the in-form Shadman Islam who shouldered an in-cutter with disastrous consequences.

It was an over where Bumrah set up Shadman with a few throws around the wicket (for the left-hander) and then came across the wicket to keep the length intact but subtly alter the line of attack.

This indecision was the hallmark of the rest of Bangladesh’s innings, as Bumrah added the wickets of Mushfiqur Rahim, Taskin and Hasan Mahmud to his collection.

Centurion Ravichandran Ashwin had to endure a rare wicketless innings, but others stepped in for him and Bangladesh also did their part with their timid approach.

This was reflected in the exclusions of Litton Das (22, 42 balls) and the highly experienced Shakib Al-Hasan (32, 64 balls).

They looked comfortable in the middle during their 51-run alliance (94 balls) for the sixth wicket.

But Litton opted for a rather unnecessary, high-flown slog sweep against Jadeja, which was caught by reserve fielder Dhruv Jurel, who came on for pacer Mohammed Siraj. Siraj had left the field for a few overs to treat cramp.

Shakib’s dismissal was even more bizarre. The left-hander attempted a reverse sweep off a full toss from Jadeja and the ball bounced off his boots and landed in the big gloves of Rishabh Pant.

Pacer Akash contributed two wickets in as many balls to dismiss Zakir and Mominul Haq, hastening Bangladesh’s downfall.

Before they collapsed into a heap, Bangladesh had a few lucky moments as they nullified the last four Indian wickets, including Ashwin (113) and Jadeja (86), to bring the hosts’ first attack to a quick end.

Ashwin and Jadeja left the game having scored 199 runs in three sessions, which they scored off 240 balls and 189 minutes. Taskin (3/55) bowled better and returned with the wickets of Ashwin, Jadeja and Akash. Fellow pacer Hasan Mahmud added a fifth wicket to his tally in the form of Bumrah to end the Indian innings. It was Mahmud’s second five-for in a row after he took one against Pakistan in Rawalpindi earlier this month. (With PTI Inputs)
