WRAL anchor/reporter leaves station for new job in Washington

Anchor/reporter Mark Boyle announced his departure from WRAL this week.

Boyle, who anchored the station’s newscasts from Live Center for nearly five years, told The News & Observer that he is taking a new job in Washington, D.C., and that Tuesday will be his last day at WRAL.

“The job as Live Center anchor at WRAL has evolved from something new on the market to a key position that plays a vital role in WRAL’s coverage of local and national breaking news,” he said. “However, the opportunity to live in D.C. and anchor breaking news for The National Desk was one I couldn’t turn down.”

“I have made great friends in Raleigh and will miss the area, but I am excited for the next chapter.”

In a post on Instagram Thursday afternoon, Boyle said he was looking forward to “broadcasting nationally” with his new job as live desk anchor for Sinclair Broadcast Group’s “The National Desk.”

His move to DC is planned for early May, he wrote.

Boyle’s biography page on the WRAL site failed to load Thursday, but an archived version of the page accessed via the Wayback Machine noted that Boyle came to WRAL from WCNC in Charlotte, where he was an investigative reporter and anchor. Boyle also worked at KPRC in Houston, WFTV in Orlando and WWSB in Sarasota.

Boyle has received multiple Emmy nominations for his work covering tropical storms and hurricanes in Florida and Charleston.

In WRAL’s bio, the native Floridian and University of Florida graduate said this about his journalism philosophy: “I believe in real journalism. Getting it right, getting it first, those are all very important aspects of the business, but getting it accurate is more important than anything else.”
