Hangover after the Brewers’ loss to the Diamondbacks

Hangover after the Brewers’ loss to the Diamondbacks

A day after the Brewers celebrated their postseason appearance and NL Central title, the post-celebration hangover kicked in Thursday night as the Diamondbacks held them to just two hits in a 5-1 loss.

The pitchers were well matched to begin with, holding the game scoreless for four innings. Tobias Myers allowed three hits and one walk in those four innings, while the Brewers managed just one hit against Brandon Pfaadt.

That changed in the fifth inning. Myers walked Gabriel Moreno and Geraldo Perdomo to put two runners on base. Corbin Carroll was next, hitting a ball toward Andruw Monasterio. What could have been a ball for a double play was missed by Monasterio, the ball bounced into left-center field and allowed Moreno to score. Ketel Marte was next, hitting a long single off the wall in right to bring in Perdomo and put Carroll on third base. That was Myers’ day. He threw 93 pitches in four-plus innings and got three runs, but only one was earned. He also managed five strikeouts, three walks and allowed four hits. The third run was a borrowed runner scored by Aaron Ashby on a sacrifice fly. Ashby ended the fifth inning for Myers, also managing two strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Pfaadt was dismantling the Brewers just five days after the Brewers scored eight runs against him. He allowed just two hits and struck out 12 players in seven innings. The only run the Brewers managed to score against him came in the seventh inning. Garrett Mitchell hit a solo home run with two outs to breathe some life into the Brewers and cut the deficit to 3-1.

That life would be snuffed out pretty quickly. After Hoby Milner pitched two scoreless innings, Joe Ross took over in the eighth. Ross allowed a one-out single to Christian Walker, then Pavin Smith hit an out to extend the Diamondbacks’ lead to 5-1. Ross only managed to 23 an inning before being replaced by Enoli Paredes. He threw just 10 pitches and three of them were hits.

From then on, the Brewers did not have another baserunner. Paredes finished the last 1 13 Innings for the Brewers, who got out of a tough spot in the eighth inning and then pitched a clean ninth inning. However, their offense failed to get past the Diamondbacks’ bullpen in the right order and they lost.

The offense managed just two baserunners in the entire game: Turang’s single in the fourth inning and Mitchell’s solo home run in the seventh. They did not manage a single walk and struck out 15 times. Every starter except Turang struck out at least once.

The Brewers are three games behind the Dodgers and Phillies after Thursday’s games and have a bye. The Dodgers beat the Marlins, while the Phillies lost to the Mets.

Tomorrow, the series will begin again with the second game against the Diamondbacks. So far, the two teams are tied 2-2 in this series of seven games in 10 days. The Brewers will see Zac Gallen for the second time in a week. Meanwhile, Colin Rea returns to the starting lineup just days after making his first career save. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. It will be available on Bally Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network, as well as on MLB Network for out-of-market fans.
