KL Rahul is stunned and looks at Gautam Gambhir in awe after Shubman Gill hits a thunderous pull shot during the 1st Test

Shubman Gill suffered an error in the first innings of the opening Test against Bangladesh but showed a much calmer approach when he came out to bat on the third day. The opener provided India with much-needed stability after an early failure of the top order against Bangladesh; despite setbacks from Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who both fell victim to Bangladesh’s fast attack, Gill’s composed approach has ensured India control of the Chennai Test.

The young batsman showed elegance as he played a series of exquisite shots on both sides of the wicket. His short-arm jab through the covers of Nahid Rana, a standout moment, demonstrated his ability to generate tremendous power with minimal effort. He partnered Kohli to score 39 crucial runs for the third wicket, although Kohli’s dismissal at the end of the day somewhat slowed India’s progress. Kohli’s departure, caught leg-before-strike by Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 17, left a brief lull in India’s attack.

During his stay at the crease on Day 2, one of Gill’s shots particularly impressed the dressing room and KL Rahul expressed his admiration for the shot.

As Nahid Rana shortened his length, Gill stood tall, pulled the ball effortlessly from outside the off-stump and hit it with authority between mid-on and midwicket. Rahul loudly applauded the knock in the dressing room with head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant performance with the ball had left Bangladesh’s batting line-up in tatters as India extended their lead by the end of the second day with a commanding total of 308 runs. Bumrah’s masterful 4/50 was complemented by the efforts of Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Ravindra Jadeja to see Bangladesh bowled out for just 149 runs as India scored a total of 376 runs in the first innings.

Siraj (2/30) and Jadeja (2/19) provided crucial breakthroughs, while Akash Deep impressed with 2/19 on his Test debut.

With a comfortable lead of 227 runs in the first innings, India ended the second day at 81/3 with Gill (33*) and Pant (12*) stabilising the innings. India’s bowlers will look to keep the pressure on with a similar performance in the second innings as they aim for a win in the first Test.
