Some news from Harry Kane. He scored four goals against Dinamo Zagreb during the week as Bayern Munich beat the Croatian side 9-2 in the Champions League. Today just one as Bayern won 5-0 at Werder Bremen, but he also set up two, for Michael Olise and Serge Gnabry. Another good day at the office for the England captain.

Tottenham Hotspur – Brentford 2-1. Spurs keeper Vicario drops a cross and then touches it with his hand outside his penalty area. However, the referee allows play to continue and then shows Kristoffer Ajer and Thomas Frank yellow cards for understandably making a fuss.

share

Liverpool – Bournemouth 3-0. Antoine Semenyo, denied an opener by VAR, comes at goal again, but Caoimhin Kelleher saves without much fuss. “I’m happy that Darwin and Diaz are getting time,” begins Richard McGahey, “but with the score at 3-0, why not rest Salah and Sobo or Mac, give Chiesa and Jones some time, and Quansah for the oft-injured Konate? I like Slot, but he’ll run these guys into the ground before the end of the season.”

Liverpool – Bournemouth 3-0. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross rebounds off Julian Araujo’s arm, but the defender’s arm was in a natural position and so the referee allows play to continue.

Newcastle 2-1 Liverpool. This goal came courtesy of a half-time substitution by Eddie Howe. He took Joe Willock off and brought on Jacob Murphy, who practically set up Harvey Barnes with his first touch of the ball. A sort of assist for the manager.

Leicester 0:1 Everton. The Toffees lead at the start of the second half. But is Gary Naylor happy? Not exactly. “Young, Keane and Tarkowski? Has a Premier League team ever fielded a slower back line? Everton are forced into the lowest of low lines and DCL are isolated up front, their confidence sinking further. How did it get to this point?”

Halftime mailbag. “I see things are going well for the trio that were promoted last season,” Jeremy Boyce observes wryly. “Play-off newcomers Saints are leading against fellow cannon fodder Tractor Boys, Leicester are falling behind against the giants Everton. I’m a NastyLeeds man to the death and I’m beginning to wonder if losing to Saints at Wembley wasn’t a bad plan. Better to fight for the Holy Land than suffer week after week in the purgatory of relegation.”

The halftimes of the championship …

  • Bristol City 0-1 Oxford United

  • Burnley – Portsmouth 0:1

  • Cardiff City 0-1 Leeds United

  • Coventry City 1-2 Swansea City

  • Luton Town 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday

  • Sheffield United – Derby County 0-0

  • West Bromwich Albion 0-0 Plymouth Argyle

… and in the Scottish Premiership …

Simon McMahon reports: “Hearts, bottom of the table at the start of the game, remain there as they trail 2-1 after the first 45 minutes at St Mirren, while Ross County, who took an early lead against St Johnstone, fell to 1-1 at half-time. The Perth side have not won in the league, having conceded a first goal for 37 games; the last time that happened was against County in December 2022, so something for both sides to cling to in the second half.”
