• The Nicholls State University football team will make its home debut with a non-league game against Mississippi Valley State. For the fourth time in as many weeks, the Colonels and their opponent will be battling for their first win of the season as both teams enter the contest with 0-3 records. Kickoff at Guidry Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and can be heard on ESPN Radio New Orleans 100.3 FM.

• Nicholls is scheduled to play another late home game, which has become a tradition for the Colonels under the head coach Tim Rebowe. Although it’s already Week 4, September 21 marks just the Colonels’ fifth Guidry debut in Rebowe’s nine fall campaigns. Under Rebowe, the Colonels are 6-3 in their Guidry debut and 29-23 overall.

• In the final game of a three-game road trip to start the season, Nicholls fell behind 24-0 in the first half at No. 11 Sacramento State, and despite scoring their second defensive touchdown of the season before halftime, the Colonels were unable to mount a comeback in a 34-7 loss. Defensive Back Ty Marsh provided the points of the night when he returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter. The Colonels defense held Sacramento State to a field goal for most of the second half until the Hornets threw a touchdown pass with less than two minutes left to seal the final score.

• The duel with Mississippi Valley State is only the third meeting with the SWAC in the Tim Rebowe Era. Nicholls hosted Prairie View A&M in 2017 and beat the Panthers 44-13. Then the Colonels fell behind on the road at PVAMU in 2019, but scored 29 straight points to pull out a 42-35 comeback win. Nicholls was scheduled to play Mississippi Valley in 2020, but the season was canceled. The Colonels are scheduled to play SWAC member Southern in two weeks.

A WIN OVER MVSU WOULD BE…

…give Nicholls a 31-15 home record in the Rebowe era.
… ended a two-game losing streak at home and improved their record to 30-23. Nicholls had won six games in a row before losing the last two.
… Nicholls won 2-0 overall against MVSU. The Colonels won the only previous meeting in 1998 at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans by 41-26.
… secure the Colonels a non-conference win for the sixth time in 10 years under Rebowe. After the first two seasons, Nicholls won a non-conference game for five straight seasons before going 0-for-win the last two years.
… improve Coach Rebowe’s record against the SWAC to 3-0. Nicholls won a home and away game against Prairie View A&M in 2017 and 2019.

IN NUMBERS

49 — Security Ty Marsh intercepted a pass from Sacramento State and returned it 49 yards for the Colonels’ only touchdown of the night. It was Nicholls’ second defensive touchdown of the season with Rasheed Lovelace also has a pick-6 at LA Tech.

107.0 – The Nicholls defense was one of the best in the Southland on offense, averaging 107 yards per game despite facing two FBS opponents.
