Oklahoma welcomes back Josh Heupel shortly before Tennessee game

Oklahoma welcomes back Josh Heupel shortly before Tennessee game

NORMAN, Oklahoma – Oklahoma welcomed back Josh Heupel, but the return was short-lived.

About 25 minutes before kickoff between Tennessee and Oklahoma, the Vols finished their warm-up.

An image was then shown on the big screen with the message “Welcome back, Josh Heupel.” Along with the message, a live video of Heupel on the field was shown, also highlighting his accomplishments as a former Sooner.

The stadium announcer also announced Heupel’s return to Oklahoma. Oklahoma fans applauded Heupel, who is now the coach of Tennessee.

It was not clear whether Heupel heard or saw the message, especially because it lasted less than 10 seconds. In addition, Heupel left the frame of the live video recording.

Heupel led Oklahoma to the 2000 national title as quarterback, finishing as Heisman runner-up. He also served as an assistant coach for 11 seasons before Bob Stoops fired him as offensive coordinator after the 2014 season.

No. 7 Tennessee (3-0) plays against No. 13 Oklahoma (3-0) in its SEC opener.

This story will be updated if there are further honors for Heupel.
