Report: Mack Brown talks about his future at North Carolina amid rumors he considered retiring after loss to JMU

North Carolina suffered a loss for James Madison on Saturday with one word in mind – embarrassing. The Group of Five program scored 70 points against the Tar Heels, which was a tough loss overall in Chapel Hill. In the long career of the head coach Mack Browncertainly one of the low points.

After the game, reports surfaced that Brown had told the North Carolina locker room that he was leaving the program and retiring, leaving just four games into the 2024 season with three wins under his belt.

However, Brown contacted ESPN’s Chris Low shortly afterward and said he would continue to be North Carolina’s head coach, but if things aren’t cleared up in the near future, changes could occur.

“Mack Brown told ESPN on Saturday that he would not resign and would ‘come back to work’ on Sunday after suffering an embarrassing 70-50 loss to James Madison,” Low said of X. “He said it was an emotional locker room and told the team that he blames himself and will resign if he can’t make things right.”

Brown took a break after leaving Texas, but returned to North Carolina before the 2019 season. This is his second stint with the Tar Heels after 10 years of rebuilding the program. He faced a similar task after two seasons under Larry Fedora.
