Andres Gomez reportedly leaving RSL as part of top 10 biggest MLS sales of all time

Andres Gomez reportedly leaving RSL as part of top 10 biggest MLS sales of all time

SALT LAKE CITY – A busy summer is not quite over for Real Salt Lake management.

Colombian star winger Andres Gomez has played his final game in Utah after multiple sources reported on Sunday that the 21-year-old will join French club Stade Rennais ahead of the season start on August 18.

El Show RSL was the first newspaper to report on X’s move. MLS insiders Matthew Doyle and Tom Bogert confirmed the report with additional sources. Bogert said the deal would net RSL “about $11 million plus $2 million in benefits,” making it the 10th-largest departure in MLS history, according to Doyle.

The spectacular transfer came after RSL set a club record by selling Fidel Barajas to Mexican club Chivas for “over $4 million” at the start of the summer transfer window in late June.

RSL used Barajas’ money to sign four new players last month, and reports say a fifth could be on the way: Doyle added in his post that Polish winger Dominik Marczuk is coming to Utah.

Gomez scored 13 goals and provided nine assists in 23 games this season, helping RSL to third place in the Western Conference with nine games left in the regular season.

Three of the five players RSL brought in during the transfer window were wingers, meaning the team was likely preparing for Gomez’s possible departure before the end of the summer.

The Claret and Cobalt return to America First Field on August 24 against the San Jose Earthquakes.
