Oregon State will look to get back on track when the Beavers host Purdue at Reser Stadium on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. The Beavers (2-1) lost 49-14 at home to rival Oregon, while Purdue trailed 42-0 at halftime and ended up losing 66-7 at home to Notre Dame.

OSU has a bye next week before hosting Colorado State on Oct. 5.

Score updates for Oregon State vs. Purdue

Gevani McCoy led a brilliant two-minute drill at the end of the first half that allowed OSU kicker Everett Hayes to make a 29-yard field goal and give the Beavers a two-score lead.

Statistical leaders at halftime

STATE OF OREGON

Total offenses: 208 yards (116 runs, 92 passes)

Passing by: Gevani McCoy – 7 of 13, 92 yards

Rush: Anthony Hankerson – 52 yards, 11 carries, 1 TD

Reception: Darrius Clemons – 3 receptions, 35 yards

PURDUE

Total offenses: 121 yards (89 runs, 32 passes)

Passing by: Hudson Card – 2 for 7, 32 yards, 1 TD

Rush: Devin Mockobee – 70 yards, 9 carries

Reception: Max Klare – 1 reception, 32 yards, 1 TD

Purdue quarterback Hudson Card threw a perfectly placed long ball down the right sideline to Max Klare, who scored a 32-yard touchdown and put the Boilermakers on the scoreboard with 6:30 left in the half.

Facing fourth-and-2 at Oregon State’s 13-yard line, Purdue decided to take a chance and try to move the chains instead of kicking a field goal.

But together, Isaiah Chisom and Skyler Thomas brought down Reggie Love III and forced a turnover.

Sophomore safety Jaheim Patterson, who transferred from Kilgore College last offseason, came into the game as a safety for the Beavers at the start of the second quarter to replace Skyler Thomas.

Patterson had a brilliant fall camp for OSU and was a standout in the final scrimmage. He played on special teams earlier this year, but Saturday was his first time on defense all season.

Anthony Hankerson plunged into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown run to cap a 12-play, 71-yard touchdown drive. The Beavers have already gained 77 rushing yards on the day.

The Beavers have been efficient running the ball so far. They face a 2nd-and-6 at the Purdue 6-yard line.

The Beavers got a much-needed boost from freshman outside linebacker Zakaih Saez, who made an incredible play to intercept Purdue quarterback Hudson Card’s pass and then run it back for a pick-six. The Beavers also had a turnover on the Boilermakers’ first drive of the day when Nikko Taylor forced a fumble and Thomas Collins recovered it.

Darrius Clemons makes his debut for Oregon State

Former Michigan receiver Darrius Clemons made his long-awaited debut for Oregon State on Saturday.

The junior wideout came into the game on OSU’s second drive of the evening.

On their first drive of the game, the Beavers attempted to score on 4th-and-short at their own 28-yard line, but Gevani McCoy’s pass down the right sideline was incomplete and OSU lost the ball on one down.

Observations before the game against Oregon State

  • Oregon State receiver Darrius Clemons is in cleats and going through early warmups with the rest of OSU’s players. Head coach Trent Bray said this week that the Michigan transfer is expected to make his season debut after being limited by injury.
  • OSU center Van Wells participated in warm-ups with the first team. He missed last week’s game due to injury.
  • Beavers nickelback Noble Thomas Jr. did not come out to warm up with the team’s other defensive backs. He has been out of action since Week 1 with an injury.
  • Jacob Strand, who has made significant appearances at both left tackle and right tackle this season, did not warm up before the game, apparently leaving last week’s loss to Oregon with an injury.
  • Other Oregon State players who were not seen during warmups:
    • DL Tygee Hill
    • DL Tyree Blake
    • S Amarion York

It’s difficult to reconcile the version of Oregon State’s defense that showed up at Reser Stadium last Saturday with the group that appeared earlier this season.

Less than two weeks ago, the Beavers’ new-look defense posted its first road shutout in 41 years, thrashing San Diego State 21-0. On that day, OSU flashed a potent defensive front filled with up-and-coming pass rushers and a veteran secondary capable of creating devastating plays.

Last Saturday, however, Oregon State had to face a boat race with its in-state rivals on its home turf.

Oregon tore the Beavers apart with 546 yards of offense and 7.5 yards per carry attempt. After struggling for consistency in narrow wins over Idaho and Boise State earlier this season, Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel tore OSU apart on Saturday with 291 yards and two touchdowns on 20-of-24 passing.

Most concerns about Oregon’s injury-plagued offensive line were dispelled last Saturday when the Ducks limited the Beavers to just 11 quarterback pressures and zero sacks.

“Self-inflicted stuff,” Oregon State coach Trent Bray said this week. “There was nothing that really made us think, ‘Wow, they were superior to us.’ Either we gave them too much respect and played too soft in coverage, or basic techniques were missing. And that’s been the case all year. So that’s something where you ask yourself, ‘OK, why did that happen?’

“We have to go out there and perform, especially in the big moments, in the big games. That’s when it becomes even more important.”

So where does the Beavers defense go from here?
