McDonald’s is increasingly doing away with cashiers with its cash kiosks

According to Bloomberg, McDonald’s is introducing a new store format in the US with digital ordering stations that can give cash and change. Thanks to the new technology, more customers can bypass the checkout line.

Although most McDonald’s stores already have ordering kiosks, customers who do not wish to pay by card must complete their transactions at the checkout with an employee.

“Human labor won’t disappear. But the new model – which exists in only a handful of restaurants – would further reduce restaurants’ reliance on cashiers, who could be deployed to other tasks, such as serving food to customers who want table service or curbside pickup,” Bloomberg wrote.

“These changes will enable franchisees to meet our customers’ increased desire for digital options while improving speed and accuracy,” McDonald’s said.

In the new store format, the screens behind the counter will no longer display the full menu. Instead, specific menu items will be highlighted and customers will be encouraged to use the kiosks. However, a full printed menu will be available upon request and customers who prefer to order at the counter will still be able to do so.

A McDonald’s spokesperson told the New York Post that the new kiosks will not result in job cuts. Instead, cashiers will be assigned to other tasks, such as bringing food to customers who have ordered online or improving the guest experience.

According to Bloomberg, the kiosks will be installed in the company’s own restaurants and will be optional for franchisees, which operate 95 percent of McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. There is no timetable for a wider rollout.

Less than two percent of franchisees have so far opted to use the new kiosks and screens, McDonald’s USA told the Post.
