College Football Rankings: ESPN releases updated FPI Top 25 after Week 4

ESPN’s latest college football rankings are in after the network updated its FPI Top 25 following Week 4 of the season.

We had some exciting games on Saturday and some significant changes in the rankings. The top 10 teams had to shift around a bit in addition to the love of movement in the second half.

Texas held its own against Louisiana-Monroe. It was Arch Manning’s first career start and he threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns. However, he did throw two interceptions.

Regardless, Texas is still the top team in ESPN’s FPI rankings. Next up is Mississippi State before an off week and then Red River. Quinn Ewers will likely be back by then.

Alabama had a week off after beating Wisconsin last weekend. Two weeks to prepare for Georgia? That’s a nice perk of the schedule.

If the Crimson Tide beat the Bulldogs next weekend, this could be your new top team in the FPI. For now, though, No. 2 will have to do.

Ohio State trailed early but overtook Marshall with a 49-14 win to improve to 3-0. Like the team above them, the Buckeyes couldn’t budge in this week’s FPI.

Quinshon Judkins is an absurd running back, as he ran 14 times for 173 yards and two touchdowns. TreVeyon Henderson ran for 76 yards and also scored two touchdowns. Will Howard even ran for one of his three total touchdowns.

Georgia also had a week off after a less than stellar win over Kentucky, so like we said with Alabama, the Bulldogs had two weeks to prepare for the Crimson Tide.

The FPI actually pushed them up this week despite the off week. Fans of the next team might not like that so much.

Despite a road win at Oklahoma, Tennessee dropped one spot in this week’s FPI, and ESPN’s ratings system could cause some excitement among Volunteers fans.

Nonetheless, Josh Hepeul returned to where he became a quarterback legend and got the win, improving his record to 4-0 on the year. Tennessee looked pretty good early on, but won easily 25-15 after leading 22-3 in the fourth quarter.

The fewest points Ole Miss has scored this year was 40, which came last week against Wake Forest. Ole Miss was dominant again in a 52-13 win over Georgia Southern.

The FPI has the Rebels ranked No. 6 this week ahead of a game against Kentucky next weekend. When they open SEC play, we’ll see what this team can really do.

Miami dominated another Florida opponent, this time South Florida. In the 50-15 victory, Cam Ward threw 404 yards, three touchdowns and a pick. Again, big numbers.

The Hurricanes shut down the Bulls in the second half and put their stamp on the game. With this big win, Miami moved up one spot in the FPI this week.

After a week off, Penn State looked rejuvenated. The 56-0 victory over Kent State gave the Nittany Lions a small boost, according to ESPN’s FPI.

Drew Allar threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns. The running game was balanced, with Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen combining for 22 runs and 147 yards.

Notre Dame controlled the game against Miami (OH) in a 28-3 win, but fell two spots in this week’s FPI. After a scoreless first quarter, the Fighting Irish woke up and took a 14-3 halftime lead.

Riley Leonard threw for just 154 yards and one touchdown. But he was great in the running game: 12 runs for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Notre Dame hosts a top-ranked Louisville team on Saturday.

Oregon had a week off after beating rival Oregon State. The Ducks actually moved up one spot in the FPI thanks to Missouri’s overtime win over Vanderbilt.

Oregon will open Big Ten play at UCLA next week. Boy, that feels weird, doesn’t it? Especially on the West Coast?
