How the Browns can limit Malik Nabers in Week 3

Through the first two weeks of the season, the Browns are the team with the most penalties in the NFL. In two games, they have received a total of 24 penalties for a loss of 164 yards.

Penalties were called on all three sides of the ball. There were six offensive holding calls, four offside calls, two defensive holdings, two false starts and 10 miscellaneous penalties.

Offensive line coach Andy Dickerson said there are some penalties they can control — like the pre-snap penalties, lining up in the right position, making sure they’re in the snap count and not being early. They want to instill the right habits in their players and teach them the right method.

“The ones you can definitely control, the pre-snap penalties, you definitely insist on those,” Dickerson said. “And again, obviously nobody goes out there to make mistakes, but when those things happen, you just correct them and remind them, ‘hey, here’s the cadence.’ You give them another reminder, ‘hey, this is going to happen, this is the situation you can be in.'”

Dickerson said they work on putting their players in different situations so they gain experience. They will go back through to work on situations, change the cadence and remind them to line up properly in the game.

“When you get into situations where you get hold calls or something like that, when it’s a physical mistake or you’re straining, that’s football,” Dickerson said. “Sometimes they happen. Do you agree with all the decisions? Not necessarily, but they make the decisions and you have to adjust. My biggest question is: What do you do after the game? Mentality for the next game, head up, regroup and play the next down because you still have a down to play. You can’t worry about a previous game and then let that carry over to the next game.”
