The sad story of former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson may not be over yet

Poor Russell Wilson. I mean that too. He’s the best quarterback in Seattle Seahawks history. He basically fought his way out of Seattle, but now he probably wishes he never did. He’s currently on his third team in four seasons and may not last long there either.

Wilson’s first two seasons after leaving Seattle were with the Denver Broncos. His first year was atrocious and an extreme disappointment for Broncos fans (not that we particularly care), and that included Geno Smith and the Seahawks beating Wilson and the Broncos in Week 1.

Seattle benefited from Wilson’s down year as they received a high draft pick. However, Wilson’s days of being useful to Seattle are over. The trade value was nonexistent after last year’s draft. Most of the players the Seahawks acquired in trade are now gone from Seattle as well.

This offseason, Wilson was released by the Broncos, although his contract a lot of dead money. He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers and was the presumptive starter. Then Wilson injured his calf and missed the first two games of the season. Justin Fields, who the Steelers also signed this offseason, has replaced Wilson and led Pittsburgh to a 2-0 start.

Fields is the younger quarterback and probably has more potential. That could make Wilson expendable. He could be traded or, even worse for him, released entirely during the season.

That’s the opinion of ESPN’s Dan Graziano, at least. In a recent article on players who could be trade candidates, he listed Wilson among the quarterbacks. Graziano writes, “Wilson has a no-transfer clause, meaning he can pick his spot (or be released) in this hypothetical scenario. And it’s been several years since he’s shown anything that would make a team want to sign him. But if someone was desperate, a trade could be an option.”

Ouch. That means Wilson may not have a place at all if he’s released and the Steelers use Justin Fields as QB1. That would be quite a setback for a quarterback who tried to get the Seahawks’ general manager and head coach fired three years ago.

Graziano’s possible destination for Wilson is Miami. That makes sense, as Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered his third concussion in Week 2 and could be out for a long time. A 25-year-old Wilson would fit well into the Dolphins’ system, as he has thrown an excellent long ball. Wilson is now nearly 36 years old and could be finished.
