Sam LaPorta among several Lions injured in the first half against the Cardinals

The Detroit Lions suffered several injuries in the first half of their Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals, including one to tight end Sam LaPorta.

Daniel Skipper

The Lions opened the game with a few jumbo plays, using Skipper as an extra tackle. He had to leave the field after the second play due to injury, but He quickly puts his helmet back on and seems ready to return if needed.

Levi Onwuzurike

First, Levi Onwuzurike cautiously left the field on the second defensive snap of the game. Fortunately, he returned to the game, but it is something to keep an eye on in the future.

Terrion Arnold

Next up was rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold, who was nursing a knee injury and was listed as questionable to return. He appeared to have been injured after Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray ran into his legs during a scramble. Arnold spent several minutes on the sideline trying to test his leg, but remained down for the entire drive. However, he eventually returned for the Cardinals’ third driveWhile Arnold was out, experienced cornerback Kindle Vildor stepped in for him.

Derrick Barnes

The most concerning injury is that of Derrick Barnes, who was carried off the field with a leg injury after being hit by a cut block. Barnes was a key part of the defense, playing the role of SAM linebacker. And with the Lions already short on linebackers – Alex Anzalone was unavailable as he recovers from a concussion – Detroit will have to rely on its reserves if Barnes cannot return to the game. According to the team, his comeback is officially questionable due to a knee injury.. In the meantime, experienced Ben Niemann has taken his place at the SAM linebacker position.

UPDATE: Barnes was later demoted to OUT.

Sam LaPorta

Then, as the half ended, tight end Sam LaPorta was the next to get injured. During a trick play by the offense, LaPorta was run over by a defender. He, too, was carried off the field.

UPDATE: According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, LaPorta returned to the field after the break.

UPDATE No. 2: LaPorta limped off the field to the sideline on the Lions’ first drive of the second half. He was seen on the Lions’ bench with his right ankle wrapped in ice.

Alim McNeill

Finally, on Arizona’s final drive of the half, Alim McNeill left the game after carefully exiting the field under his own power. Due to a shoulder injury, his comeback is officially questionablebut was not on the pitch at the start of the second half.

UPDATE: Alim McNeill has been demoted to Out.
