Seattle beats Miami and remains undefeated

Three weeks into the Seattle Seahawks’ new era, they are still perfect.

Seahawks win: Observations | Our findings | Result

The Seahawks took care of a Dolphins team that was struggling with all sorts of quarterback issues on Sunday to pull off a 24-3 victory, keeping Miami completely out of the end zone and increasing their lead to 3-0.

As we do after every Seahawks game, we’ve gathered the on-the-spot reactions to the win from Seattle Sports. Read what they had to say below, and tune in to Seattle Sports 710 AM, the Seattle Sports app or the SeattleSports.com streaming service all day Monday for even more Seahawks analysis, starting at 6 a.m. with Brock and Salk and including the Mike Macdonald Show at 8:30 a.m. with Seattle’s head coach.

Nothing beats the Victory Formation, where you keep your opponent out of the end zone all game long. That’s not a common occurrence in the NFL, especially considering the Hawks also lost the turnover battle and were assessed 11 penalties. But the Hawks were better than Miami, outpacing Miami in power and yardage, and they combined several explosive plays offensively and defensively to overwhelm the struggling Dolphins.

They lit the 12s and raised the volume in Lumen Field to a level we hadn’t seen in a long time. 3-0 is an incredible start for the new team and program.

The warm-up phase of the schedule is over and now we get to see what this Seahawks defense looks like against a top-10 offense on the road in Detroit on Monday Night Football. But before they could look ahead, this team got the job done.

The Seahawks defense is not going to be picked apart by backup quarterbacks, especially at home, and they made that very clear to Skylar Thompson and Tim Boyle. They apply constant pressure, over-cover in the secondary, and make enough tackles to force the opposing offense to do something special when it wants to march down the field. Put them in a fast-change situation? No problem—the Seahawks only allowed three points after two turnovers in their own territory. And with an offense that can complement that defense well, you have a team that has shown it can beat inferior opponents.

Next up: the first chance to face one of the league’s better teams without a rookie, placeholder or backup quarterback. Based on what we’ve seen so far, Detroit will have its hands full.

This was a thoroughly impressive defensive effort by the Seahawks today that was designed to “tear the soul out of the opponent.” I don’t want to hear any qualifications about the backup quarterbacks or the opponents of the Seahawks defense since they were missing one of their inside linebackers and then they were also missing Leonard Williams and Byron Murphy.

The defense did not allow the Dolphins to mount a single offensive drive that resulted in points. As in baseball, the three points given up must be blamed on the Seahawks offense. The defense simply held on and did not give up when the Dolphins took control at the 6-yard line. Likewise, it was an inspired goal line stand, even though Miami had advantageous starting position late in the third and into the fourth quarter.

Seattle’s injury spree has been tougher for the offensive line to navigate, and there are many questions about the long-term viability of this group, especially as the competition gets tougher. However, you can only play the team in front of you, and the Seahawks did that with a convincing 3-0 victory.
