Travis KelceThe slow start to the season has set off alarm bells for some football fans, but the Kansas City Chiefs are not worried.

Kelce, 34, has caught just four passes for 39 yards in the Chiefs’ first two games – an unusual start for a player who has established himself as one of the most dominant tight ends in football for a decade.

But Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy is not stressed about Kelce’s statistics.

“He knows who he is,” Nagy, 46, said during a press conference on Thursday, Sept. 19. “We know who he is. If you know that, it’s important to know that.”

Taylor Swift has loved being the girl in the stands as her romance with Travis Kelce blossoms. Swift made her first appearance at a Kansas City Chiefs game in September 2023, watching from the Kelce family’s private suite as they beat the Chicago Bears. Nagy added: “It’s just a matter of time.”

During the Chiefs game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, September 15 – with girlfriend Taylor Swift and cheered him on – Kelce caught the ball just once, the first time since September 2018 that he had not caught three or more passes in a game.

“I’ve known him for a pretty long time,” Nagy said of Kelce. “I’ve seen him in practice. I’ve seen him in games. Nothing has changed. He’s been great.”

Nagy served as the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach from 2013 to 2015 before serving as offensive coordinator from 2016 to 2017. After coaching the Chicago Bears for four seasons, Nagy returned to the Chiefs as a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach in 2022.

In 2023, he was promoted to offensive coordinator and helped Kelce and the Chiefs to their second consecutive Super Bowl.

“Travis has been really good,” Nagy said. “You look at the goals, you look at the numbers, you look at all that with Travis.”

Bolstered by the support of his coaching staff, Kelce himself said he “stopped caring about statistics four or five years ago.”

“I just went out there and started playing freely and making plays for my guys,” Kelce said on his “New Heights” podcast on Wednesday, Sept. 18. “I think that’s definitely the better mindset. You think more about play by play and what your job is on that particular play.”

Kelce admitted that he has not made a splash so far this season, saying, “For some reason, things have not been going well for me the last two games.”

“This is football, man,” he told his brother and podcast co-host Jason Kelce. “I’m not going to sit here and be mad about it. I used to get really, really mad and almost lose it when I wasn’t successful, because I knew that was what I was asking of myself. I just like playing the game with such a high level of responsibility that it’s hard for me to deal with being mediocre or having stats that reflect that.”
