Tom Brady on the toughness of the Ravens and how Lamar Jackson can get even better

Tom Brady on the toughness of the Ravens and how Lamar Jackson can get even better

Tom Brady knows a thing or two about epic comebacks. But FOX Sports’ leading NFL analyst also knows a thing or two about how difficult it is to beat the Baltimore Ravens.

The resilience of John Harbaugh’s Ravens that Brady knows so well was on display again Sunday in Dallas. Baltimore went into the game 0-2 after losing one possession each to the Kansas City Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders, then nearly lost a 22-point lead to the Cowboys in the fourth quarter when Dak Prescott led the team in a furious comeback.

But Lamar Jackson used a crucial third-down pass and a fake jet sweep run to score game-winning first downs to cap the Ravens’ 28-25 victory. He also put together an individual performance, with the reigning NFL MVP throwing for 182 yards and a touchdown and running for another 87 yards and another touchdown.

“It’s a big relief for them,” Brady said. “They had expectations coming into this year because they finished 0-2 last year. Last week everything sucked for them.”

“They came here on the road, got off to a fast start and weathered the Cowboys storm. I like the Cowboys’ fighting spirit, I like the Ravens’ toughness. … This game for me was about Baltimore’s toughness. They’re a tough organization. They’ve got a tough head coach. They’ve got battle-tested guys. You have to hang on for four quarters to beat a team like that.”

Brady said the diversity of the Ravens’ offense, and especially the tandem of Jackson and running back Derrick Henry – who was named LFG Player of the Game in Week 3 after a 151-yard rushing performance and two touchdowns by Brady – made things particularly difficult for the Cowboys’ defense.

“(The Cowboys) have problems inside and trying to slow down those running games,” Brady said. “This is a team that has a good pass rush. … You can have a great pass rush, but you can’t make a difference in the game because you can’t even get it to a third down. Today, toward the end, they actually got (the Ravens) to a couple of third downs and got them off the field. But in the beginning, when Lamar is right, Lamar is left, Derrick is right, Derrick is left and then the (bootlegs) are coming off those things, you’re just such a moving target, and as a defender, you get very hesitant for sure. You don’t know how to rush, you don’t know how to drop. You’re going side to side and you can’t be aggressive.”

As for whether the Ravens can continue to win the rest of the season, Brady seems optimistic about their quarterback. It’s well documented that Jackson is a huge Brady fan. The two-time NFL MVP often refers to the seven-time Super Bowl winner in public as “the GOAT.” But Brady made it clear during Sunday’s broadcast that the feeling is mutual, showering Jackson with praise and admiring how the 27-year-old superstar continues to develop as an NFL quarterback.

“His field vision (is) really spectacular,” Brady said during the game. “For a player that does so many things in the pocket and then comes out of the pocket, his field vision is incredible. His decision-making from the pocket is incredible. … The development of a quarterback is playing with his skills from the beginning and then asking yourself, ‘How do I continue to develop as a player?’

“What I saw last year with (Ravens offensive coordinator Todd) Monken was he came in and said, ‘OK, we’re going to put more effort into playing out of the pocket.’ Now they’re talking about how we can give him more responsibility. Some of the things that have challenged the Ravens defense in critical situations is, for example, when the defense is applying a lot of pressure. Kansas City did that in the AFC Championship game last year. They did it earlier this season. (The Ravens) said, ‘OK, Lamar, when you see that maximum blitz — and you’re the MVP of the league and you’re phenomenal — but those are areas where we think you need to improve a little bit. Now you’re going to have more control at the line of scrimmage to make some protection checks and then hurt the blitz, and that’s really where I see his development as a player to the next level.”
