Former Philadelphia Phillies player fired by Cincinnati Reds

Many former Philadelphia Phillies players remained in the baseball world as coaches.

This includes David Bell, who was a member of the team from 2003 to 2006. Bell, who had a 12-year career in the major leagues, spent time as an assistant coach with the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals.

He was named manager of the Cincinnati Reds in 2019 and signed a contract extension through 2026 last year.

That contract didn’t help him, however, as he was released on Sunday night, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The decision to sack Bell comes as no surprise. The Reds played well under him during parts of his time at the club, but the season was not so successful.

“David has given us the consistency we needed in our clubhouse over the last few seasons. We felt a change was needed to move the major league team forward. We weren’t achieving the success we expected,” general manager Nick Krall said, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Although they have struggled with injuries all season, there is no excuse for them sitting in fourth place in the subpar National League Central with a 76-81 record.

With only four games left in the regular season, it’s an interesting time to let him go, but Cincinnati obviously wanted a new man at the helm.

During his three full seasons with the Phillies, the infielder posted a batting average of .253/.327/.381 with 32 home runs, 78 doubles, 175 RBI and an OPS+ of 83 in 1,387 at-bats.

Bell was part of the team in 2006, but did not finish the season with Philadelphia.
