Reds release David Bell five games before the end of the regular season

The Cincinnati Reds are facing their final games of the 2024 season, but will be without David Bell on the coaching bench.

The Reds released Bell on Sunday night after a 2-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The loss dropped the Reds’ season record to 76-81.

Cincinnati named bench coach Freddie Benavides as interim coach for the final five games of the season.

“David has provided the consistency we needed in our clubhouse over the past few seasons. We felt a change was needed to move the Major League team forward. We have not achieved the success we expected and must focus on 2025,” Nick Krall, Reds president of baseball operations, said in a press release.

The Reds hired Bell before the start of the 2019 season when he replaced Bryan Price and Jim Riggleman. Price was fired during the 2018 season and Riggleman took over for the remainder of the year.

Bell never led Cincinnati to a better finish than third place in the National League Central Division. The Reds made the playoffs in the coronavirus-affected 2020 season, but it is their only playoff appearance since 2013.

As a manager, Bell is 409-456.

Cincinnati has a lot of potential and the organization is confident that a new voice could help the team overcome the hurdle. Hunter Greene, Elly De La Cruz and Andrew Abbott are among the young players paving the way for the future.
