The Cincinnati Reds announced on Sunday that they have fired manager David Bell.

According to Lance McAlister of 700WLW, the Reds have named Freddie Benavides interim coach for the final five games of the season.

Cincinnati has a 76-81 record this year and will miss the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. The Reds have made the playoffs just once during Bell’s six-year tenure.

Bell made his debut as manager of the Reds in 2019 after Jim Riggleman failed to take over as interim manager following the firing of Bryan Price. He led the Reds to the postseason in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season as Cincinnati finished 31-29, but the Reds fell to the Atlanta Braves without a single point in the series.

The 2020 postseason was the only one Bell reached during his time in Cincinnati, and the Reds lost 100 games in 2022 for only the second time in franchise history. Things improved slightly in 2023, when Bell led the Reds to an 82-80 record, prompting Cincinnati to extend Bell’s contract mid-year through the 2026 season.

Based on last year’s improvements, the Reds believed they could compete for the division title and a postseason spot this year, but the 2024 season proved otherwise.

“David has provided the stability we needed in our clubhouse over the past few seasons,” Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall said in a statement. “We felt a change was needed to move the major league team forward. We have not achieved the success we expected and must focus on 2025.”

Bell finished his six seasons with a record of 409-456. His 32 managerial firings are also the most in franchise history.

Reds interim manager Benavides has served in various roles with the Reds since 2007 and became Cincinnati’s first base coach in 2016. He was promoted to bench coach prior to the 2019 season.

While the Reds’ search for a coach is still in its early stages, a name has already emerged. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported shortly after Bell’s firing that Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker was on Cincinnati’s radar as a replacement.

Although Schumaker has not been fired yet, a 57-99 season for the Marlins seems to indicate that his time in Miami is coming to an end.
